How to read a heatmap
A heatmap turns an entire market into a single, color-coded picture so you can see what is moving at a glance — no scrolling through hundreds of tickers.
- Color = performance. Green tiles are up on the day and red tiles are down. The deeper the shade, the bigger the move — a sea of green means a broad rally, a wall of red means a sell-off.
- Tile size = weight. Bigger tiles are bigger companies by market capitalization (or heavier index weight). Mega-caps dominate the map, while smaller names sit in the corners.
- Grouped by sector. Tiles are clustered into sectors — technology, financials, energy and so on — so you can instantly tell whether a move is broad-based or driven by one corner of the market.
- Tap any tile to drill in and switch the time frame from today's move to weekly, monthly or year-to-date performance.

A stock market heatmap is a visual map of a market where every company is a rectangle. The color shows how the stock is performing (green up, red down) and the size reflects how large the company is by market capitalization.
