What Is BIST 100?

The BIST 100 (XU100) is the main and most widely followed index of Borsa İstanbul, Turkey's stock exchange. This guide explains what the BIST 100 is, how it's calculated, how it differs from the BIST 30, and how to track it live.

What is the BIST 100?

The BIST 100 is a market-cap-weighted index made up of the 100 largest and most liquid companies trading on Borsa İstanbul. It represents the overall direction of the Turkish stock market; investors use it to gauge whether the market is rising or falling.

Think of an index as a 'basket': the combined performance of its 100 stocks determines the index value.

How is the BIST 100 calculated?

The BIST 100 is calculated using a free-float-adjusted market-cap weighting. That means companies with a larger market value and a higher public float have a bigger impact on the index.

Index constituents are reviewed periodically; companies that meet the liquidity and market-cap criteria are added or removed.

BIST 30, BIST 50 and BIST 100

  • BIST 30: The 30 largest companies; the core, most liquid index used for futures.
  • BIST 50: The 50 largest companies.
  • BIST 100: The 100 largest companies; the broadest representation of the market.
  • All: Every stock on Borsa İstanbul (the 'All' option in Heaticker).

Why does the BIST 100 matter?

The BIST 100 is the 'pulse' of the market: it reflects overall risk appetite, the trend, and foreign investor interest. Many funds and ETFs use it as a benchmark.

Instead of tracking individual stocks one by one, you can glance at the BIST 100 to understand the market's overall state.
